Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered a major economic statement to Parliament today to tackle the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and high inflation. For individuals and businesses managing tight budgets amid global instability, her announcement brings a mix of immediate financial relief and a firm reminder of government spending limits.
The biggest surprise came on the road, where the Chancellor executed a U-turn on transport tax. To protect supply chains and commuters from surging oil prices, the government has cancelled its plan to scrap the 5p-per-litre fuel duty cut. This freeze provides vital breathing room for logistics fleets and motorists, although the Treasury does seem to be planning to pivot taxes toward electric vehicles in the coming years.
To cushion heavy industries from the sting of soaring operational costs, the Chancellor unveiled a sweeping reduction of over one-third to the duty on red diesel, throwing a vital financial lifeline to the nation’s industrial backbone until the turn of the year. This intervention offers financial relief for construction, agriculture, and logistics firms.
On energy, the government is shifting how utility support works to offer long-term relief to households. Policy costs like green levies are being permanently moved off energy bills and into general taxation, lowering average household bills.
However, businesses remain exposed to the volatility of the wholesale energy market, as they do not benefit from consumer price cap protections. To manage these uncapped overheads, businesses are being encouraged to shift their focus toward the tax system. By investing in green technology and energy-efficient building upgrades, companies can utilise capital allowances to lower their overall corporation tax liabilities alongside reducing long-term energy consumption.
The ‘Great British Summer Savings’ scheme was also unveiled — a package of seasonal reliefs designed to stimulate domestic spending. By slashing VAT on tourism, attractions, and hospitality down to a modest 5%, the Treasury is paving the way for more affordable staycations and family outings during the warmer months. This warm-weather boost sits alongside the implementation of free bus travel for children across England throughout the month of August to coincide with the summer school holidays.
